My trip to Alaska

Recently, my family and I went on a two-week trip across Alaska. It was a huge adventure to say the least!

We went to five different cities, and saw everything from orca killer whales to moose to caribou. We traveled the Alaska Railroad. We kayaked around icebergs. We were there on the solstice and experienced the longest day of the year. I sampled locally brewed kombucha around the state. We saw Denali, the highest mountain peek in North America. We flew over a large glacier and landed on it!

One place we visited was the Exit Glacier, which is part of a national park outside of Seward, Alaska.

On this glacier, they have date markers which illustrate how the glacier has receded over the years. Scientists started documenting it back in 1917. Over 100 years, it has receded close to two miles.

It was interesting to see how the National Park Service had taken time to note the significance of these changes over the past 100 years.

It got me thinking… how often do we NOT take the time to recognize the changes in our lives?

It’s common to stop and reflect on a birthday or over New Years, but otherwise, it’s easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day that we don’t pause and reflect.

As my daughter prepares for college, I’ve been looking back at the past 18 years and thinking about how my life has changed and evolved…

– I pitched my first PPR Strategies client when I was 9 months pregnant…
– I hired my first employee a couple years later.
– Since then, I’ve had many employees and contractors, short-term clients and long-term clients.
– I’ve helped launch new programs and campaigns.
– I’ve had opportunities to watch programs grow.

There’s been a lot of change and evolution! This shows me how far I’ve come and what I truly have to celebrate.

Rather than just waiting for every major life milestone, what if we took time at the end of every day, every week to reflect on:

  • How are you growing?
  • What can you celebrate?
  • What would you like to do differently and do better?

Each day we have the opportunity to implement the change that we desire… and to celebrate the accomplishments we have achieved.

‘Til next time,
Sandy
