Start the year Strong by Creating Your Editorial Calendar

As we come near to the end of the year, it’s time to start thinking about how to get a jumpstart on the new year.

What can you do now to prepare yourself for the new year so that by January 1st, you’re ready for your most productive and successful year yet?

One way to prepare yourself for the year ahead is to plan out your Editorial Calendar in advance. Having this jumpstart on 2018 will give you a sense of calm and confidence because you’re one step ahead of the game.

I don’t believe that Editorial Calendars need to be etched in stone, but they do give you a game plan to work from. You’ll be thankful for them later!

To create your Editorial Calendar, start with a simple spreadsheet and a column for each month.

Then fill in each month with theme ideas using the following prompts:

  • What seasonal or quarterly themes and holidays are relevant to your industry or  organization?
  • What events do you have on your calendar that you’re planning or participating in?
  • What industry trends or data points do you want to reference?

These points can give you some inspiration for themes and topics to hit on during the year.

And don’t forget to make it fun! Periodically “making it personal” is never a bad thing. You could highlight a team member or board member in an email. Or you’ll often see that I’ll write about a recent vacation or family life event. (I’ll warn you now… My daughter will be going into her senior year of high school next year… so expect some college visits and college towns to be highlighted in 2018.) 🙂

How are you planning on getting a headstart on the year? Send me a message and and let me know!

‘Til next time,
Sandy
