Communications Specialist – Writer

Lindsay Renner Wood

A born wordsmith, Lindsay has had a lot to say from nearly the moment she was born. She grew from a constantly-scribbling kid and teenager to an adult with a combined decade’s worth of experience in journalism and communications. Lindsay has worked as a staff writer at the Maryland Independent and the Cumberland Times-News. She also served as a public relations writer for the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

During her time at DHCD, Lindsay penned everything from social media posts and talking points for department leadership to a series of blog posts on the department’s Project C.O.R.E. initiative, as well as a series featuring some of Maryland’s Main Street communities. The Main Street series led her to Allegany County, where she most recently worked as a staff writer for the Times-News. There, she primarily focused on Mineral County, West Virginia, as well as feature stories about social issues.

Among other publications, Lindsay’s writing has been featured in the Washington Post and the Associated Press, and her original reporting has been cited in Newsweek and Forbes. She’s received multiple awards from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association and a Governor’s Citation from former Gov. Larry Hogan for her work on the Maryland Charity Campaign. Lindsay has a bachelor’s degree in English from Saint Leo University.

Favorite part of her job: It’s hard to beat having your passion as your profession.

Professional superpowers: Finding ways to make even the most everyday pieces of writing something special. Thinking of the right questions to ask to help tell a great story.

Personal superpowers: Cracking myself up, and even sometimes other people. Knowing just what herbs and spices a dish is lacking, and adjusting accordingly. Occasionally, wrangling a devious hairless cat.

Favorite things: All animals but especially cats and dogs; reading and writing; iced coffee with oat milk; wearing dresses with Doc Martens; pulling off a new recipe perfectly the first time; mountains in the fall; horror movies; the beach at night; road trips of any length with my husband.
