How volunteering got me a ride in a C-17 military aircraft!

Last summer I had the opportunity to ride in a C17 military aircraft. It was absolutely amazing! To fly around the region — a hundred mile loop — and ride in a military aircraft was pretty incredible.

I got this opportunity as part of an event hosted by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. I was one of 50 representative of businesses and organizations throughout the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, who were invited to learn about the Guard and what they do.

I found the event to be such an amazing experience — and wanted to share what I learned with you.

In Martinsburg, West Virginia, we have the 167th Airlift Wing of the Air National Guard. We got to hear about the employees that work there and the members of the community that are in the Reserves. The purpose of the event was to educate businesses and organizations about the National Guard, so we can better support employees who are called to active duty.

This was an example of a positive community outreach event. I was thrilled to represent PPR Strategies, the Shepherdstown Rotary, the Shepherd University Alumni Association, and as a board member of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

I also got to connect in person with presidents of some companies PPR Strategies works with. I might not be working directly with the president of the company, so meeting in person is a great way to develop the relationship. In a casual environment, it can be easier to relate to people on a more personal level. And if I can connect and relate to them, and help understand their priorities and goals, then I can do my job better.

I encourage you to get involved in your community. You never know what opportunities will present themselves! Whether I’m helping organize a 4th of July parade, or getting involved in my daughter’s school, I do it because “it takes a village” and we all need to do our part to make our community stronger.
